Fellowships at LSCNY

LSCNY encourages law students to consider seeking a fellowship that may be served with us. We welcome the opportunity to discuss fellowship possibilities with interested applicants and would be happy to work with students to develop viable proposals.

Beginning in September 2005, LSCNY will have a Skadden Fellow. A former extern from the Syracuse University College of Law was awarded a fellowship for the Inclusive Communities Project. The Project will address the rights of individuals with disabilities to fully participate in communities throughout Central New York by preventing their continued institutionalization or residence in a overly restrictive environment. The U.S. Supreme Court's 1999 decision in Olmstead v. L.C. by Zimring requires states to provide disability services outside of an institutional setting when appropriate. Today, many people in our region remain institutionalized in nursing homes, developmental centers, prisons, and psychiatric facilities because inadequate community services exist. The Project will combat legal and societal barriers to inclusion through increased legal representation in healthcare, housing, education, and employment matters.

The Project is unique, as it will work with Syracuse University's new multi-disciplinary Center on Disability Studies, Law, and Human Policy to coordinate legal representation and community education initiatives designed to integrate people with disabilities into our community.

Individuals interested in seeking fellowships through the organizations listed below can obtain more information on their websites. Other fellowship opportunities may be available. You should check with your law school placement office.
