About the Special Advocacy Unit

Why we are Here

The Special Advocacy Unit was formed in 2004 to represent clients in cases and matters prohibited for representation by federal funding recipients, and to fill some of the important gaps in representation in our service area. SAU is funded by IOLA and state legislative grants and has some restrictions and financial eligibility requirements.

We try to choose cases which will have an important impact on the law, on the practices of government or institutional organizations, or which will benefit multiple clients. We are able to bring class action lawsuits, and to represent clients without regard to their immigration status or the fact that they may be incarcerated. If you think the issue you face may impact many others as well, we encourage you to contact SAU to discuss your case. Some of the priorities which we have established are detailed in the boxes to the left and right.

Legislative and Administrative Advocacy

LSCNY can and does lobby at the state and local level on issues impacting our clients. A recent example is lobbying on local ordinances permitting municipalities to shut off tenant’s water where landlords fail to pay bills. The SAU can comment on proposed legislation and regulations without restriction. We have also joined coalitions to advocate for law changes in the state legislature.
